Twig Morphology: Bud Types

buds contain the apical meristems, and are responsible for primary growth (lengthening)

Terminal Buds the bud or buds on the apical end of a twig
Clustered Terminal Buds more than one bud on the apical end of a twig
Pseudoterminal Buds a lateral bud that is now on the apical end of a twig due to dieback
Lateral Buds buds borne along a twig in the axils of the previous season's leaves
Collateral Buds accessory buds arranged on either side of a lateral bud
Superposed Lateral Buds accessory buds arranged above a lateral bud
